Plain language (AI-supported)

Content simplified at the touch of a button — for people with reading difficulties, language learners and those in a hurry.

What is that?

What does "Plain Language (AI-supported)" mean?

Plain language is a German set of rules for greatly simplified texts: short sentences, no foreign words, clear images, one idea per sentence. It is designed for people with cognitive impairments, dementia, hearing loss (sign language has its own grammar), and language learners. We offer the original and plain language versions via a toggle switch—generated by AI and editorially reviewed.

Why is it important?

Obligation and Benefit — WCAG 3.1.5.

WCAG 3.1.5 (Reading Level) Level AAA is recommended, suggesting that complex content should also be available in a simpler form—at the secondary school level or lower. The BFSG (Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research) justification explicitly refers to plain language as a means of cognitive accessibility. A marketing benefit as well: plain language increases conversion rates for all other users (mobile, in a hurry, multilingual).

Our implementation

How we will solve it specifically.

  • For each original text, an AI-generated simplified language sister text (model: Claude/GPT-4 with rule prompt).
  • Editorial final check by trained staff — AI does not replace proofreading, only preliminary work.
  • Toggle per page: „Easy Language" — seamlessly switches between variants.
  • Symbol library (e.g. METACOM, Inclusion Europe) for key terms.
  • HTML with lang="de-x-easy"" Marked — Screen readers can be customized.
