4 AI modules for content accessibility

Code mechanics alone are not enough. If an image has no alt text, no ARIA manager will help. If texts are too complex, no heading repair will help. This is where the four AI modules come in—they complement the mechanics. Content layer.

Bring-Your-Own-Key · Zero-Retention

Your API key, your data

The AI modules do not call a DigElite server. They speak. direct with the AI provider, whose key you enter in the plugin settings. This results in three properties:

  • No DigElite data stream. Your content is not reaching any of our servers.
  • We do not store data on third-party systems. We do not log prompts or answers.
  • Direct contract with the AI provider. You are familiar with the data protection conditions (e.g., Anthropic's zero-retention clause for API customers).

Supports: Anthropic Claude, OpenAI, mistral, other OpenAI-compatible endpoints (Azure OpenAI, local models via Ollama).

AI Module 1

AI Alt Text Generator

It automatically detects missing alt text in the media library and generates it. German, context-appropriate descriptions. You retain control: each suggestion is displayed in the detailed view of the media and must be confirmed by you.

What it does

  • Scans media library for images without a filled Alt field.
  • Generates a suggestion in 1-2 sentences, focusing on the content (not "picture of …")
  • The suggestion will remain in the "Suggestion" field until you save.
  • Bulk mode for older posts (packs of 100)

WCAG reference

1.1.1 Non-text content (A) — A mandatory criterion for any WCAG compliance.

AI Module 2

AI Easy Language

Translates complex content into Plain language compliant with DIN SPEC 33429. In the frontend, visitors get a toggle switch for "Easy Language" — the plugin generates the translation on the first visit and caches it for each page.

What it does

  • Shorten sentences to a maximum of 15 words.
  • Explain foreign words
  • Active instead of passive
  • Avoid Mediopassive constructs
  • Retain images, retain layout

WCAG reference

3.1.5 Difficulty level (AAA) — is required as "best practice" in many BFSG audit reports.

Important: AI translation is not a substitute for a certified plain language translation in the strict sense (with a review panel). For legally required texts (e.g., for government agencies), the certified version remains the safer choice.

AI Module 3

AI ARIA assistant

Complex custom widgets (e.g., self-built accordions, tabs, tooltips) often require specific ARIA markup, which a mechanics module cannot guess. The AI ARIA assistant analyzes the DOM structure and suggests a suitable ARIA.

What it does

  • Analyze the DOM structure of a component
  • Suggest suitable roles, states, and properties (`aria-expanded`, `aria-controls`, `role="tablist"` …)
  • Provide a reason in one sentence.
  • Show suggestion as code diff — you accept with a click

WCAG reference

4.1.2 Name, Role, Value (A) + 1.3.1 Information and Relationships (A).

AI Module 4

AI Audit Assistant

Complementary to classic audit tools (axe, Wave, Lighthouse): the AI recognizes Pattern problems, which purely technical scanners cannot see — e.g. inconsistent tone, unclear link texts, misleading microcopying.

What it does

  • Page-by-page scan for WCAG content violations
  • Issue list with severity level and specific solution recommendation
  • Export as CSV / Audit Report
  • History tracking: "This site had 47 issues 3 months ago, now it has 12"„

Note on audit security

The AI audit assistant It does not replace a manual audit by a certified expert.. It is a preparatory tool to reduce issues before the expensive audit. Manual auditing remains the standard for the final declaration of conformity.

GDPR · EU AI Act

What you need to add to the privacy notice

Once you activate AI modules, you process content via the AI provider. That is no Data processing agreement with DigElite — but rather your own processing via your contract with the AI provider.

  • In the privacy policy: Add AI provider, purpose, and legal basis.
  • A separate data processing agreement with Anthropic / OpenAI must be concluded (available online).
  • For particularly sensitive data: Deactivate AI modules or use a local model via Ollama.
  • EU AI Act: AI modules are „low-risk" — no AI audit required for website use

We will deliver to you upon request pre-formulated data protection modules for the AI modules — not legal advice, but a starting point that your lawyer will then review.

Need to set up AI features? We'll take care of it.
